Watching Time : 30 Minutes
Amazing Experience
A 24-hectare biodiversity park established in 2017 in the eastern extent of Kotte’s wetland network(Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka, 2022). It features wetlands and lakes with boardwalks and viewing towers. Like Beddagana, Diyasaru (meaning “rich in biodiversity”) offers nature trails popular with birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, and hosts educational programs for students. Together, Diyasaru and Beddagana – only a few kilometers apart – form part of a “popular birding circuit” where visitors can easily visit multiple wetlands in a single day(Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka, 2022). This proposal considers Diyasaru Park as an integral attraction to be linked in the Kotte eco-tourism itinerary.

January 23, 2025Average experience. Tickets are sold at the very front of the carpark. As a foreigner, the price was 500 for an adult. Only 100 for a local adult. The service... read more was terrible and slow. In the actual park, we got to see lots of squirrels, fish and birds. But no sight of the fishing cats or otters which are supposedly more active at night. The park is very popular for local couples. Most of the visitors to the park seemed to be on dates. It was still a nice walk around for something to do and to get amongst nature.

I visited Diyasaru Park for birdwatching and had a good experience overall. Before going, I called the staff, and they advised me to visit early in the morning, between 6... read more AM and 8 AM, for the best chance to spot birds. Since it was December, I was told it wasn’t peak bird season yet, but I still managed to see several birds during my visit. One thing to keep in mind is to watch your step, especially if you’re walking around while looking through your camera. The park is home to plenty of monitor lizards, and I had a close encounter with one before I noticed it nearby! The park also has an observation tower for birdwatching, but I didn’t see many birds from there. Most of the bird activity I observed was while walking around the grounds. From what I’ve learned, the best bird season might be after January or February, so I’m planning to visit again around that time. The staff at the park were very friendly and helpful. They not only provided guidance but also shared their own experiences, which added to the charm of the visit. If you enjoy birdwatching or just want a peaceful walk in nature, Diyasaru Park is definitely worth checking out!
